The Recycling Facility operates at the same location as the landfill and manages the recycling program of accepted materials. Our goal is to provide sustainable, cost-effective recycling solutions to the communities in our region.
The items listed below are not all received inside the Recycling Facility building. Please follow staff directions to where each of these items can be unloaded, such as the sea cans for electronics and the metal pile.
Accepted recyclable materials at the WRWMC site and Recycling Facility:
- Cardboard, mixed paper, and paperboard
- Rigid plastics #1 to 7 (see image below for identification logos)
- Metal (e.g., steel, tin cans, aluminum)
- Appliances (e.g., fridges/freezers, dishwashers, etc.)
- Electronics (e.g., vacuums, TVs, small appliances, audio equipment, etc.)
- Used oil, filters, and jugs
- Paint and paint cans
- Tires (automotive/agricultural/industrial)
- Batteries (Ni-Cd, NiMH, lead acid, alkaline)
- Fluorescent bulbs/tubes
- Deposit items (e.g., aluminum cans, plastic pop/water bottles). *It is preferable to take these items to the Bottle Depot.
Note: Plastic containers over 20L must be cut into sections no larger than 18 inches. This includes barrels, drums, totes, tanks, etc. PVC piping greater than 4 inch diameter and/or 18 inch length will not be accepted.
Materials not accepted in the Recycling Facility:
- Glass
- Straws and plastic utensils
- Styrofoam and rubber
- Film plastics (e.g., plastic bags, tarps)
- Fabric
- Hazardous wastes
Note: These items are accepted at the garbage transfer bins or landfill, instead of the Recycling Facility. Household hazardous wastes such as bleach, tub & tile cleaners, bug sprays, etc. are accepted in the totes specified for these products. They are at a different location than the garbage bins.
Our Recycling Partners
The WRWMC Recycling Facility works in partnership with the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA). We are an authorized depot for the electronics, paint, tires, and used oil programs. For more information on each program, click the icons below.
The Recycling Facility also partners with Tony Schoorlemmer of Alberta Recycled Plastic Lumber. After the recyclable plastics have been ground and bagged at the WRWMC Recycling Facility, they are used by Tony to make recycled plastic lumber. This product can be used for numerous construction projects such as the flower planters at our site, decking, and boat docks (see image below). Click this link to watch a video of how the plastics are turned into the lumber product.
